More About Curtis

Curtis-overlooking-Graz

I was barely a teenager when I decided that my future profession would involve design. Ironically, I made the decision after creating possibly the ugliest poster in existence for my high school’s upcoming production of The Wizard of Oz.

Eventually, somewhere between working as a client services coordinator for a large printing company and, over a decade later, crafting brand identities and marketing collateral for companies like ATB Financial, Federation of Calgary Communities, Edmonton Motors, and Nomodic, I developed an immense appreciation for how attractive, purposeful, and functional visual communication has the power to shape people’s perceptions and help businesses and entrepreneurs achieve their goals.

Experience & Education

Most recently I spent nearly a decade building the brand and leading the marketing department at Nomodic, an innovative provider of prefabricated buildings. Joining in 2014 (the company’s 4th employee), I played a key role in growing Nomodic to over 100 team members, eventually earning recognition as one of Canada’s Top Growing Companies by The Globe and Mail in 2019 and 2020.

My education includes a Bachelor of Communications – Information Design degree from Mount Royal University and a Digital Graphics Communications diploma from SAIT. These programs equipped me with not just technical skills, but also the theory and psychology behind crafting clear and compelling information.

In 2013 I attended FH Joanneum University of Applied Sciences in Graz, Austria, where I spent a rewarding semester learning about information design and visual communication in Europe.

Additional Background

Besides enjoying spending time with my wife and young son, my other hobbies include music, both listening and performing; I've been a drummer since the age of 11 and have played in bands in both Vancouver and Calgary. I also enjoy reading, writing, gaming, and traveling in my spare time. In 2010 I backpacked across Australia and New Zealand, and I spent the summer of 2013 traveling through Europe.

Information Design: Leading With Purpose

Wondering about the benefits of working with an information designer?

Unlike typical graphic designers, who often focus on aesthetics or artistic expression, information designers delve deeper, prioritizing the purpose and audience of each project. This holistic approach ensures clarity, conciseness, and compelling communication, as we carefully craft messages using design, writing, and a dash of psychology.
