Who do you work with?

Small businesses, new businesses, entrepreneurs, and freelancers who need a bit of help producing functional, attractive visual communication that truly reflects who they are. I also enjoy working with larger companies (marketing departments, etc.) on an ongoing basis to produce design materials as required.

What makes you different than other designers?

Unlike traditional graphic designers, my diverse background in information design allows me to look “deeper” into what makes design functional and compelling. Truly effective design goes beyond “what looks attractive”; it is a combination of psychology, words, imagery, and above all, an unwavering focus on your target audience.

I have also spent years in the print industry, which allows me to easily manage print projects and speak “print lingo”.

Finally, customer service is my top priority. I take great pride in being responsible, dependable, and attentive to all my clients’ needs.

Do you do all of the work?

Yes—this allows me to be more versatile and flexible to meet your needs. If a task is better suited to another person, I’ll find an outstanding partner who can help.

Can you help with printing?

Absolutely—from choosing the perfect paper stock to performing press checks, I’m happy to assist with print management (usually invoiced hourly).

What is your availability?

My availability during the week is largely open with some flexibility for work outside of business hours where needed. Availability may vary based on ongoing projects and workload. Additionally, I am open to considering long-term projects and exploring full-time positions.

How do you balance your freelance work with a full-time position?

Balancing both requires effective time management, a skill honed through my previous full-time roles. I prioritize deadlines, ensuring quality and creative input for both freelance and full-time commitments. While presently engaged with freelance clients on a part-time basis, I remain open to compelling full-time opportunities, ready to channel my dedication and creative energy.

How much does it cost to hire you?

This depends largely on your individual needs and the scope of each project. For larger projects (branding/logo design, etc.) I prefer to charge at a project rate so clients know what they will be paying up front. For ongoing help and print management services, I find an hourly rate is generally easiest. For more information, please contact me and I will put together an accurate estimate based on your needs.

How do you accept payment?

For most projects, I request a 25% down payment before commencing work, and bill the remaining 75% once a project is complete. I accept payments via cheque, bank transfer, PayPal, or credit card. The exact details and terms are outlined in an agreement form I send to new clients.

What does your tagline (“Where Design Meets Purpose”) represent?

Glad you asked! Primarily two things:

  • My background as an information designer has taught me about the immense benefits of exploring and emphasizing the purpose of each project I undertake, rather than simply designing something that looks aesthetically pleasing.

  • I’m passionate about using design and my skillset to help businesses and individuals who lead with purpose and who are making a difference in their communities and industries.

How can good design benefit me and/or my business?

My blog is largely dedicated to answering this very question. In short: consistent and attractive design, targeted towards a specific audience, has the power to influence behaviour. It can compel someone—often subconsciously—to purchase a product, invest in a service, or simply hit a “Like” button on Facebook. Thus, from large items such as a logo to small details such as the space between letters (kerning) on a form, it is important that any brand or designed piece generates a positive “gut feeling” in those who view them. When can I get started?

Chances are, right away. However, I’m careful not to overbook myself so that I can give focused and dedicated attention to each client. Please contact me to check my availability, which tends to change all the time.
